Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is a hormone that helps regulate blood sugar, appetite, and digestion. It’s produced naturally in the body, but synthetic versions are also available in popular prescription medications such as Zepbound and Ozempic. Common side effects of taking these drugs include constipation and nausea. This is because GLP-1 agonists slow the digestive process, and eating high-fat, low-fiber foods can magnify that effect to the point of discomfort.

The good news is that a low-fat, fiber-rich diet can help improve digestive function and naturally ease those side effects! We put together some of our favorite GLP-1-friendly recipes, low in fat and rich in the two main types of fiber: soluble fiber, which helps with blood sugar control and stimulates the body’s natural production of GLP-1, and insoluble fiber, which aids in digestion and keeps food moving along so that it doesn’t linger and cause digestive distress.

Note: We’ve highlighted the amount of fiber in some of these recipes to showcase just how nutrient-dense they are. You can also find the nutritional information on the corresponding recipe page. But try not to get too caught up in the numbers: When you eat a whole-food, plant-based diet, you will naturally consume plenty of fiber.

A shocking 95% of Americans don’t get the recommended daily amount of fiber. This critical nutrient is abundant in legumes, whole grains, vegetables, and fruit. Essential to gut health, fiber reduces inflammation, improves blood sugar regulation, promotes healthy blood vessels, reduces cancer risk, and promotes weight loss. And yes, it keeps you regular!

The good news is that when you eat a diet rich in whole, plant-based foods, it’s easy to get the fiber you need. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends women aim for at least 25 grams of fiber per day, while men should target about 38 grams, or 14 grams for every 1,000 calories.

Here are some of our favorite vegan high-fiber recipes, from satisfying soups and stews to quick pastas, delish breakfasts, tasty tacos, and even a few high-fiber desserts. Note: All of the mains have at least 13 grams of fiber (often much more) and the breakfasts and desserts have at least 8 grams per serving. In many recipes, they can be used interchangeably with onions, and we find them preferable to onions in recipes where the flavorings are subtle. Leeks perfectly complement mild-tasting ingredients such as potato, garlic, zucchini, and white beans, and they work equally well with more robust flavors. Tips

Washing leeks: Dirt gets caught between the fibrous leaves and is often hidden from sight. Be sure to peel back the leaves and rinse well. Check out our guide to leeks for more on how to wash, store, prep, and cook these large, cylindrical alliums.
